OUR ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR

By the end of 2012, some 720 Farmer Associations have been formed in 720 villages, 130 communes of 60 districts in 12 provinces (Kandal; Kampong Cham; Kampong Thom, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Takeo; Kampong Speu; Pursat, Battambang; Pailin, Siem Reap and Banteay Meanchey). Srer Khmer has delivered a wide range of farmer led training to more than 50,787 households (48% of whom were women), farmer trainers and Government District Trainers (about 200,935 farmers family beneficiaries). The main methodology has been the Farmer Field School (FFS - participatory and discovery learning approach) and extension approaches.

To achieve these results, Srer Khmer works based on project by project from donor/s guided by our strategic plan 2011 – 2015. Srer Khmer run projects with effectiveness and efficiency. Our administration cost is low and operational costs are met with the target clients/beneficiaries. Srer Khmer runs projects in 12 provinces without having any vehicles since the inception of the organization.

Our management and technical staff members hold at least University degree in agriculture/rural development/economic development/natural resources management plus professional trainings and equip with just necessary equipments such as motor-bike and laptop to deliver a high quality services with professional manners.

Srer Khmer implements project-based on funded by development partners and the annual budget is between $350,000 to 500,000USD.

Some services are included trainings related to Integrated Farmer Field  School, Farmer Life School, Socio-economic analysis, integrated homestead production, farmer association management, business planning, participatory marketing studies, project management/PME, knowledge management, Training of Trainers, and other topics related to natural resource management; ecological agriculture and rural development, participatory research and analysis, organizing and facilitating training and workshops at the provincial and national levels.

PROJECTS IMPLEMENTED BY SRER KHMER FROM 2002- PRESENT

A.  Partnership Projects with International Organizations and Donors

 

  1. Livelihoods, WASH and Nutrition Components of EFAP-AF -- supported by ADB through Plan International in Cambodia to implement this project for a period of 14 months from September 2013 to Oct 2014 in Kampong Thom province. This project aims to reduce the vulnerability of 5,489 ID Poor Households in Kampong Thom by improving their access to sufficient and nutritious food. To achieve it, the project will increase the availability to and awareness of nutritious food and hygiene, increase access to improved agricultural inputs and technologies as well as improving capacities to mainstream food security.

  2. Extension of SRI techniques to improve farmer resilience – supported by Oxfam America to implement a Farmer Field Schools (FFS) on the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and seed breeding towards climate change adaptation in Pursat and Kampong Speu provinces for the past 4 years until February 2013. The project now has an extension for another 3 years until February 2016.

  3. Empowering farmer groups towards sustainable agriculture- in partnership with UNDP GEF SGP CCBAP with funding supported from SIDA and AusAID  implemented a project based in Kampong Speu province. This project aimed to introduce coping strategy to the climate change by using sustainable agriculture techniques through IFFS from July 2011 to January 2013.

  4. Increasing Dialogue for Empowerment and Actions (IDEA)-in partnership Catholic Relief Services (CRS) with funding supported from the United Stated Government implemented a project based in Kampong Cham province. This project aimed to reduce vulnerability and improved livelihoods of Muslim Cham rural poor depending on natural resources and other agriculture, value chain and marketing activities. This is a 2 year and three months project started from October 2010 to December 2012.

  5. Supporting Land Rights for Small Household Farmers towards Livelihood  Security for poor farmers in Banteay Meanchey and Battambang provinces in post conflict food security supported by Norwegian Peoples Aid (NPA) since 2002. This year NPA is to cover from January to December 2011. The project has been implementing in a support from NPA since 2001 and 2011 is a phase out year from Battambang and Banteay Meanchey provinces.

  6. Civil Society and Pro-Poor Market- in partnership with The Asia Foundation (TAF) with funding supported from DFID/DANIDA no cost extension NRML implemented a project based in Kampong Speu province. This project aimed to reduce vulnerability and improved livelihoods of rural poor depending on natural resources and other agriculture, value chain and marketing activities. This is a 9 months project started from March 2011 until November 2011.

  7.  Conduct training to Cashew Farmer Associations and Training was supported by EC-IFC-Phase 3 for a 6 month period in Kampong Cham and Kampong Thom from January to June 2011. This project works in cooperation with GRET (a French NGO specialized in Agriculture and Rural Development) to provide training on the following topics (i) Farmer Association Management training, (ii) Organic cashew production methods training, (iii) Internal Control System (ICS) for organic registration, and (iv) Pre and Post Cashew Harvest management training.

  8.  Integrated Farming and Marketing for Livelihood Improvement project – is supported AusAID’s Community Development Fund to implement a two year project in Pursat province from Feb 2011 to January 2012 for rice improvement, and homestead production and marketing.

  9.  Farmer Field School- Chicken Production – in getting contract from CARE EC Food Security project implemented a pilot FFS on chicken production in Pailin province for a period of 3 months and ends on March 2010. Another one year project is on the process to cover from 1 April 2010 to April 2011.

  10.  Agricultural inputs distribution – in partnership with FAO-EUFF implement a project to distribute agricultural inputs to household affected by the volatile food prices in Kampong Speu province. This project started from April 2010 to May 2011.

  11.  Conducted training to Cashew Farmer Associations and Training was supported by EC-IFC-Phase 2 for a 5 month period in Kampong Cham and Kampong Thom from July 2010 to December 2010. This project works in cooperation with GRET (a French NGO specialized in Agriculture and Rural Development) to provide training on the following topics (i) Farmer Association Management training, (ii) Organic cashew production methods training, (iii) Internal Control System (ICS) for organic registration, and (iv) Pre and Post Cashew Harvest management training.

  12. Rural Ecological Agriculture for Livelihood (REAL) - supported by KEMI/SIDA (Swedish Aid) through the Field Alliances (TFA) based in Bangkok, Thailand, to implement a project on chemical free vegetable production in Kampong Cham province. This is a 3 years project which is currently implemented as phase 1 of a regional project led by KEMI and the FAO Vegetable IPM programme: "Towards a non-toxic environment in South-East Asia." The project was finished in 2010.

  13. Development project – supported by Latter Day Saint Charity (LDSC) to provide training on home garden and chicken production to the farmer groups in Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham and Siem Reap provinces. This project is implemented from Feb 2010 to November 2011.

Integrated Farming and Marketing Systems - 2- in partnership with CRS-USCC with funding both from CRS and McKnight Foundation (US) to implement a project on integrated farming, cash crops and marketing based in Siem Reap province. This is a 3 years project started from August 2007 to July 2010.

  16. Farmer Field School on SRI and Book Keeping – supported by Oxfam America to implement a pilot project of 15 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) on the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and Bookkeeping in Pursat province from July 2009 to March 2010 to evaluate SRI rice production and marketing against other rice production systems.  Another three year project is on the process to finalize.

  17. Conducted training to Cashew Farmer Associations and Training was supported by IFC/MPDF for a 8 month period in Kampong Cham and Kampong Thom from November 2009 to September 2010.

  20. Integrated Farming and Marketing for Livelihood Improvement - in partnership with NZAID based in Bangkok, Thailand to implement a supplementary project to that supported by CRS in Siem Reap. This NZAID SGP funded project started from November 2007 and will be finished in October 2009.

  21. Agro-biodiversity Used and Market Development Contributing to Food and Livelihood Security - in partnership with PEDIGREA Association based in the Philippines and received funding from NOVIB (Oxfam Netherlands). This is a one year project for Farmer Field School in rice and vegetable improvement and marketing, started from January 2009 to December 2009 and it is a follow up project in KDL, KSP and Takeo provinces.

  22. This is a 2 years project started from August 2007 and will end on July 2009.

  23. Pilot Development of Cashew Farmer Associations and Training was supported by IFC/MPDF for a 6 month pilot project in Kampong Cham and Kampong Thom from January to June 2009. The project commenced in 2008 with support from Mekong Rain Natural Foods (MRNF) for organic cashew production in Kampong Cham province. IFC took over the initiative in 2009 with support for a 6 month Cashew Farmer Association development and training pilot project. With IFC support Srer Khmer produced training manuals and provided training and support to 12 Farmer Associations (360 farmers) in (i) Farmer Association Management , (ii) Organic cashew production methods, (iii) Internal Control System (ICS) for organic registration, and (iv) Pre and Post Cashew Harvest management.

  24. LEARN IT Project supported by ADB/CARDI to assist in implementation of CRKB to assist farmers to make rice management decisions to improve productivity and profitability in Prey Veng, Svay Rieng and Pursat provinces. This project was implemented from mid-2007 to 31 December 2008.

  25. Integrated Farming and Marketing for Livelihood Improvement - in partnership with FAO in Phnom Penh to implement a one year pilot project in Pursat on rice and homestead production from January to December 2008.

  26. Food Security and Livelihood Improvement Project supported by CIDA/FSIF conducted Farmer Field Schools in cash crops, vegetable and animal production for poor farmers and supplied chickens to the poorest farmers to 14 Farmer Associations in Battambang province from May 2006 to April 2008.

  27. Establishment of Village Fruit Nurseries in 4 Selected Villages, Banteay Meanchey – supported by EC's ECOSORN the project developed 4 fruit tree nurseries Banteay Meanchey province in 2008.

  28. Integrated Women Empowerment Project – in partnership and supported by ADDA (Agriculture Development Denmark Asia) in Siem Reap Province. The project and partnership ended on 31 December 2008 the project focus was on Farmer Associations, integrated farming, rice, vegetables, animal production for benefit of poor rural women. 

  29. Small Scale Irrigation System to Support Livelihood Security - as top-up grant to the GEF funded project, this UNDP TRAC FUND project is implemented in Kampong Cham province to ensure water supplies to increase agriculture productivity and diversification of community agriculture and to improve safe drinking water supplies.

  30. Livelihood Improvement Project, for poorer farmers in Kampong Cham province, supported by CDF-AusAID from January to December 2006 provided Farmer Field Schools in livelihood improvement and homestead production and Farmer Association formation.

  31. The Participatory Plant Breeding Project (PPB), The PPB project was supported by the Center for Genetic Resources, Wageningen University Research and the PEDIGREA Foundation, Asia focused on participatory crop and poultry genetic resources in rice-based farming systems in Kandal, Takeo, Battambang and Kompong Speu provinces.

B.  Sub-Contract Projects with International Organizations, Firms and Donors

  1. Kampong Thom Food Security and Nutrition project – As a sub-contractor with the Cambodia HARVEST which is funded by USAID to implement a project Cambodia HARVEST in Kampong Thom province for 14 months started from June 2012 to July 2013.

  2. Pursat Food Security and Nutrition project ­– As a sub-contractor with the Cambodia HARVEST implements the Cambodia HARVEST project for 18 months starting from September 2011 until May 2013. Another extension phase will be the end of June 2013 to implement horticulture, nutrition and rice production.

  3. Enhancing Capacities for Disaster Risk Reduction in Agriculture in Cambodia and the Philippines. with the support from FAO through OSRO/RAS/210/EC, Srer Khmer has provided a sub-contract to support in the development of DRR action plans in Kampong Speu province. This project is from January to November 2013.

  4. Conduct agro-chemical training – As a sub-contract with the Cambodia HARVEST to provide training to inputs suppliers in Battambang province for a period of 5 months from May to October 2012.

  5. Support of Mine Clearance for Development Project - with financial support from EC's ECOSORN project implemented a post-demining agriculture training in homestead production, cash crops and Self Help Group formation in Taven village, Morng Reussey district, Battambang province over 7 months to November 2007.

  6.  Provision of Facilitation of Community Flood Management (CBFM) and School - supported by the ADPC office based in Bangkok, Thailand, to implement a pilot project training commune councils in disaster management and rehabilitation in Prey Veng and Kandal provinces over 4 months to end September 2007.

  7.  Proactive Project to train and support 15 community forestry LNGOs from 12 upland and lowland provinces for the SGP - PTF Programme administered by UNDP. The LNGOs were given training in Project management, Business and Marketing and Knowledge Management and field coaching in Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation over a 12 month period.

  8.  Urban/Peri-Urban Agriculture supported by FAO/United Nations based in Rome, Italy to conduct a study on low income producers in urban and peri-urban of Phnom Penh. The study was subsequently incorporated into a regional manual.

  9.  IPM program in rice and vegetables supported by FAO/United Nations using FFS approach 2002-2005 was an extensive national program and core a program and origin of Srer Khmer.

  10.  Farmer Life School training supported by FAO, in social welfare, health (HIV/AIDS awareness) and food security along Highway 5 in 2003 was delivered by Srer Khmer

  11.  On-farm Trials of Low Net Tunnel Technology supported by SUSPER/AVRDC-MOFA (France) to trial to grow leafy vegetable crops under plastic  was a small research project undertaken by Srer Khmer

  12.  Insect Ecological Identification and Training Project, supported by the Dietrick Foundation, USA 2002–2005, was undertaken by Srer Khmer to support the IPM program and organic farmers and to eliminate pesticide use.

C.  Capacity Building and Research Projects

  1. A study into Good Practices for DRR in Agriculture in Cambodia (Kampong Speu, Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear). Srer Khmer was offered a contract to facilitate this study by FAO (OSRO/RAS/201/EC) from May to September 2013.   

  2. Providing training on climate resilient agricultural techniques to CCLAW. Srer Khmer was offered a contract to facilitate some training to Ministry of Women Affairs for a project funded by CCCA (Cambodia Climate Change Alliance) -Climate Change Adaptation for Livelihoods of Rural Women. The project is implementing in Steung Treng and Oddar Meanchey provinces from Feb 2013 to April 2014.

  3. Support in the development of DRR actions plan. Srer Khmer was offered a contract to facilitate the DRR action plans in Kampong Speu province under the project Enhancing Capacities for DRR in Agriculture in Cambodia and the Philippines (OSRO/RAS/201/EC) from Feb to Nov 2013.   

  4. Providing training on chicken and pig production – in partnership with CARE CHiFS project in Ratanakiri province facilitates training of trainers on chicken and pig production started from April to June 2012.

  5. Providing training to KREDIT MFI – in partnership with KREDIT MFI conduct livelihood training to their clients started from April to Oct 2012.

  6.  Conducting training on Cashew production – in partnership with MOT-ADB-JFPR and MRNF conducting training to farmers in KPT. This is about 40 days works only

  7.  Providing training on agricultural techniques to TAF partners. Srer Khmer plays a role as service provider to facilitate 13 trainings on home garden, mushroom production, chicken raising, fish and frog raising in Kampot province for a period of two months which started from June until August 2011.

  8. Providing training on agricultural techniques to CREDIT MFI. Srer Khmer was offered a contract to facilitate some 90 training to CREDIT MFI clients on agriculture techniques between June to December 2011.

  9. Providing training on agricultural techniques to WVI-Cambodia. Srer Khmer was offered a contract to facilitate a series of training to WVC projects on agriculture techniques between January to December 2012.

  10. Providing training on agricultural techniques and farm management to IGE (private company). Srer Khmer was offered a contract to facilitate some training to IGE field staff on agriculture techniques and farm management between June to December 2011.

  11. Responsible use of Agro-Chemicals and Value Added Agri-Services - supported by IFC/MPDF to conduct 2 cash crop Farmer Field Schools, survey of local pesticide use and value chain crop marketing/storage was undertaken as a short term project/consultancy for Maddox Julie Pitt (MJP) Foundation in Samlaut district, Battambang province from July to December 2007.

  12. Capacity Building for Farmer Associations Project supported by DANIDA-IPM in Kandal; Kg. Cham; Takeo; Kg. Speu; Battambang; Siem Reap and Banteay Meanchey provinces provided governance and leadership training and exchange visits for Farmer Associations. 

  13. Post-FFS Training in cooperation with FAO-IPM to provide training in living soil and SRI rice techniques to Farmer Trainers and District Trainers post FFS in Battambang, Kandal, Kampong Cham and Siem Reap provinces.

  14. In cooperation with DANIDA-IPM Project, in 2006 Srer Khmer was the resource organization in developing training guides on topics related to livelihood improvement and training to strengthen farmer groups in capacity building, organization and management, marketing, and exchange visits, etc.

  15. In cooperation with other agencies. FAO/National IPM to facilitate training of Farmer Trainers in Prey Veng province; with TCP/CMB capacity building post FFS; and with Care Cambodia FLS training in Battambang province. Srer Khmer has conducted external project evaluations for other NGOs, and CRS (Svay Rieng province), training for Mlup Baitong (Kg. Speu province), training materials for Danida–NRM-CDC and a horticultural consultancy for VSO (Stung Treng province).

  16. NGO Forum contracted Srer Khmer to conduct a series of regional Pesticide Workshops covering pesticide use, health, regulation and alternatives.
